Daringbadi
Kashmir of Odisha

A complete guide to Odisha’s most enchanting hill station — pine forests, silver waterfalls, misty valleys, and a drive you will never forget.

📍 Kandhamal, Odisha
🌤️ Best: Oct – March
🏔️ 3,000 ft Altitude
⏱️ 2–3 Days

Why We Fell in Love with Daringbadi

When summer hits its peak in May, most people head indoors. We decided to trace the winding ghat roads 3,000 feet above sea level to discover if Daringbadi truly lives up to its reputation as the “Kashmir of Odisha.”

Nestled in the Kandhamal district, this breathtaking highland paradise is blanketed in pine forests, cool mountain breezes, and mist-soaked valleys. Unlike the manicured hill stations of North India, Daringbadi is beautifully raw. The roads are narrow and winding, the emus are unexpected, and the silence at Sunset Point is genuine.

“In the city, we only learn how to race. Coming to places like Daringbadi reminds us what it actually means to live. The destination is just an excuse — true peace is who you share the journey with.”
— Rakesh, Destination Diary

Sitting by the rocky stream at Lover’s Point, watching the water tumble over ancient boulders, that moment encapsulated exactly why we travel. It’s not just for the Instagram shots—though Daringbadi delivers plenty of those—but for rare, unhurried moments of genuine presence.

What to Pack (Don’t Ignore This!)

Evenings get chilly even in summer. Waterfall trails get wet. Good gear makes the difference between a good trip and a great one.

🔋

Heavy-Duty Power Bank

Budget stays in Daringbadi often lack reliable power backups. A 20,000mAh fast-charging power bank is non-negotiable.

🎒

Backpack Rain Cover

Waterfall mist (especially at Ludu) and sudden mountain showers will soak your bag. Protect your electronics!

📱

Waterproof Mobile Pouch

The spray at the major waterfalls is serious. If you want to shoot videos near the cascades, keep your phone dry.

🛏️

Travel Neck Pillow

The drive to Daringbadi via the Chandragiri Ghat is long and winding (3,000 feet of hairpin bends). Save your neck!

📷 Our Camera Gear for this Trip

To capture the crisp mountain visuals, we relied on our Sony Alpha ZV-E10K, stabilized footage with the DJI Osmo Pocket 3, and used the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro / Action 6 for those intense, wet waterfall shots.

Pro Tips & Real Talk

🧥
Pack a Light Jacket: It gets genuinely chilly here in the evenings, even in peak summer.
Start Treks Early: Midhubandha stairs are steep. Go before 10 AM to avoid midday heat.
🔴
The Red Water is Natural: Don’t panic. The water isn’t polluted; it’s colored by Odisha’s iron-rich soil.

Let’s Keep It Beautiful 🌿

Odisha is “India’s Best Kept Secret,” but spots like Midhubandha are facing severe plastic pollution.

  • Pack It Out: Bring a trash bag. Whatever you bring in, carry back out.
  • Respect Zones: Advocate for “No Plastic, No Alcohol” areas.
  • Support Locals: Buy local coffee and pepper. Hire local guides!
